The good news — The nominations for this year's Portal Awards are in and Watchmen has made it into the Best Movie category along with Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach getting a nod for Best Actor.
The bad news — Both Haley and the Watchmen movie are facing tough competition along side some huge fan favorites.
In the Best Movie category Watchmen goes up against both Star Trek and The Dark Knight — two films that Watchmen will have a hard time edging out. Rounding out the category is The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and The Incredible Hulk.
In the Best Actor category, Jackie Earle Haley’s Rorschach is facing off against Heath Ledger’s Joker, Christian Bale’s Batman, Zachary Quinto’s Spock and Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk.
An international nominating committee is put together by the Airlock Alpha website every year around January, and they work from then until June to put together nominees from movies and television shows that have had to have premiered in the United States between June 1, 2008 and May 31, 2009.
Readers have a chance to vote for their favorite in each category once per day for 30 days beginning June 25, 2009 on Airlock Alpha — so get out there and show your support for Watchmen! For a full list of nominees, click here.
The Portal Awards started in 1999 when it was called the SyFy Genre Awards. This is the 10th year for the awards, and since then there have been more than two million voters over that time.
