Actor Matthew Goode, cast to play billionaire super hero Ozymandias, aka Adrian Veidt, in the upcoming Watchmen movie, was recently interviewed by British movie mag Total Film. When asked if the movie will be faithful to the graphic novel, Goode commented:
I'm not sure what's happening with the end of the movie. You know there’s an audience who are going to get pissed off if you start fucking around with the story and right now [GOODE REVEALS A BLOODY HUGE SPOILER]. I don’t know if I should say that or not.
The spoiler? Any fan familiar with the most recent Tse script (which this site had available for download until we were asked to remove it by the big WB) knows that Goode is referring to the leaked screenplay’s ending which is drastically different from Alan Moore’s original text. An ending that would undercut the entire climax of the film. Goode adds:
Well, can Hollywood deal with that ending? It’ll be interesting…
Watchmen fans have been up in arms about this so much, if you visit any message board that even mentions the upcoming film, you’ll find countless posts spewing anger about this unfaithful ending. There’s even a petition to keep the ending true to the graphic novel on IMDB’s Watchmen movie forum.
The fact that Goode mentioned that he’s “not sure what’s happening with the end of the movie” would lead me to believe there is some debate going on whether or not it should be changed to an ending that aligns better with Alan Moore’s original version. This is one fan that hopes that it will.
