There have been rumblings in the past about DC Comics exploiting the Watchmen world without the blessings of creator Alan Moore, and now, in he wake of NY ComicCon, those rumblings are a little louder.
When the rumor mill first started churning, many fans felt it was a lot of hot air, but then until Alan Moore confirmed that he had been approached by DC to make a nefarious trade. He would get the rights back to the original Watchmen comic series, and in return, DC could reboot the Watchmen franchise with new comic titles and spinoffs. Moore, of course, flatly refused.
Now it seems that Bleeding Cool has come across some very interesting information about the status of the infamous Watchmen prequels. Before now, all we knew was that Watchmen co-creator Dave Gibbons would likely be involved in what could be be considered the Watergate of the comics industry (Watchmengate?) despite writer Alan Moore turning his back on the whole ordeal. Here's what Bleeding Cool's Rich Johnston said in the recent article about the pseudo-blashpemous matter.
I was told before New York Comic Con that [new Watchmnen projects] might be back on and that DC were drawing up a wishlist of creators for a series of Watchmen prequel comics.. Well, I’ve now heard a lot more. Darwyn Cooke’s name is at the very top, linked to drawing two mini-series and writing another, followed by the likes of JMS, JG Jones, Andy Kubert and Brian Azzarello. Whether or not they have been approached, I don’t know, and no one’s talking, but it gives you an idea of the scale. I would also expect Dave Gibbons and John Higgins to be involved in some way.
Johnston also went on to say that creative meetings at DC are happening this week and that the project has a secret name, “Panic Room.” When Johnston asked Dave Gibbon's himself about these rumors, all the illustrator would say was, “hurm.”
So, could we finally be getting The Comedian's Vietnam War Diaries, or a new Rorschach title? Only the suits at DC and a few comics professionals who like to live dangerously really know for sure. Stay tuned.
