...Yeah, I'm having a really hard time coming up with a defense for Mirror Mirror.

To be fair, purely on a technical level, there's no denying that the Mirror trailer is constructed far more poorly than the Huntsman one. I find it rather pathetic that the movie directed by Tarsem Singh -- a man who's recently come to be known for his visual panache -- was also the movie that resorted to obnoxious voice-overs instead of letting the visuals speak for themselves.

On the other hand, Mirror clearly shows a ton of annoying humor that no amount of editing could fix, unless it's to take out every line of dialogue that's shrilly delivered. What's more, I was hoping that this might be a great opportunity for Julia Roberts and Nathan Lane to act in roles outside their comfort zones. Wow, do I feel like an idiot now.

All the same, I just can't bring myself to get behind Huntsman just yet. I'm still not convinced that the filmmakers didn't hire Kristen Stewart just to play Bella again, and the fact that they're invoking the Alice in Wonderland remake is anathema to me.

Additionally, Tarsem Singh earned a lot of credit with me for Immortals. Yes, that movie had a mess of a screenplay, but it did a very successful job of portraying a heightened reality in a mature way. I'm still hopeful that Singh directed this material every bit as competently, and this trailer is just an unfortunate hack-job aimed at the youngest possible audience.

TL, DR: I need to see more of both.

Have you ever seen The Cell?

I purposefully decided to skip that in favor of the movie he made just after that, "The Fall." I'm sure it was a huge improvement.

I haven't seen The Fall, so I have no way of knowing. The Cell isn't that bad, however. I think it might have been a better movie had it not starred Lopez and Vaughn.

it's a shame that Mirror Mirror is coming out in the spring, it would be really successful in the UK during the Christmas/January panto season, not even sure if any other countries even do panto,

Nope, no-one wears pantos in New Zealand.

huh? a panto isn't a type of clothing. It's a type of comedy fairytale stage-play for kids traditionally shown at Christmas.

Yeah, i know. I was just being a dick.
New Zealand was still very much a colonial outpost type of place when i was growing up (not so much these days, it has embraced it's South Pacific-ness a helluva lot more). Most of our TV and many of our customs were direct imports, so I am familiar with the ol' christmas panto.

'Oh yes he is...!"
"oh no he isn't!!'

lol ok, I'm not really surprised that you have panto down there though, or should I say I'm less surprised to find you were joking than I was when I thought you were being serious.

Mirror Mirror feels like a Shrek movie.
Relatively (Media) harmless.

both look fairly shitty: Mirror Mirror looks like an obnoxious children's film, while Huntsman looks just as bad as the other attempts of grimdarking fairy-tales (though maybe that's not an accurate statement since those stories were fairly grim to begin with.)

The ironic thing is that only one of the movies graced the Grimm brothers with screenwriting credits. And it wasn't Huntsman.

Where the hell does the "Huntsman" even come from ? Is that the original title of the tale ?

The Huntsman was hired by the queen to cut out Snow White's heart. His resolve gives out at the last minute, so he warns Snow White to run away and brings the Queen a pig's heart instead. It's all there in the original story, at least according to Disney.

Curiosity: educating fools on the manner of fairy-tales.

New Mirror Mirror trailer, now with funny gags!
Visually it looks good, and Armie Hammer seems likeable.

The new trailer is certainly an improvement, though that ain't saying much!

I'll agree that the visuals are amazing, but it still looks way too aggressive in how cutesy it's trying to be.
