Pain and Gain is an upcoming movie directed by Michael Bay and written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, based on an article published in 1998 by the New Miami Times.

The movie is centered in Adrian Doorbal (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) and Daniel Lugo (Mark Wahlberg), two bumbling bodybuilders who decide to kidnapp Marc Schiller (Tony Shalhoub), a Miami businessman, in order to use the ransom money to save their gym. The plan goes wrong, and Schiller discovers their identities. In order to silence him, they leave him to die, but Schiller recovers and plans to enact revenge against his captors.

The cast also includes Ed Harris as a detective hired by Schiller to capture Doorbal and Lugo; Rob Corddry as John Mese, a bodybuilder-turned-accountant who runs the gym and ends up being caught up in the duo's scheme; Anthony Mackie as Lugo's sensitive friend who becomes the unwitting third member of the gang; and Bar Paly as Lugo's girlfriend Sabina Petrescu, an illegal immigrant, ex-beauty queen and aspiring actress.

Pain and Gain is Bay's first non-action movie. With a budget of $20 million dollars, the movie will have no action, aside from one car crash, and is being marketed as a "dark comedy" in the same vein as Fargo and Pulp Fiction.

The movie is produced by Bay's Platinum Dunes and will be released in 2013.

The true story behind this fascinates me. It'll be interesting to see how Michael Bay fares with an a genre other than action.

I generally like Marky Mark and I generally like The Rock, and this kind of looks like a return for Michael Bay to his 90s hey day, could be good, but I'll reserve judgement for now.

Mark is looking hench though, I wonder what super hero he might be good as.

Ditto.
I would love to see The Rock in more non-action movies.

Just like Vin Diesel, (see Boiler Room, Find Me Guilty) The Rock may have untapped potential.
But you can be for damn sure I want to see Luke Hobbs come back in Fast Six and Fast Seven.

Good fun.

This is either the film in which we discover that Bay really had the talent to reach those heights all along, or it's going to be a failure of laughably big proportions. Hope for the former, expect the latter, I guess.

Regarding Michael Bay, I don't actually hate him as much as so many other film buffs do. He's great at getting huge movies made on a relatively conservative budget and shooting schedule. He shoots cars like precious few others in the business can. The participation he gets from the armed forces is second to none, and I honestly don't see the problem in his approach to action.

HOWEVER, the guy is terrible at developing nuanced characters and his sense of humor is godawful. When Bay tries to put in comic relief, the results are annoying at best and offensive at worst.

Just my two cents.

Pretty much

Frankly, such an interesting story could've been done by ANYONE else, why did it have to be Michael Bay is completely beyond me.

No fucking way this is as good Pulp Fiction or Fargo. But if this 1/4 as good as Burn After Reading, then it´s Bay´s magnus opus.

Honestly, if this brings the humor that permeated his old R-rated flicks, it´s a start. After that everything else is a bonus...

The only two things I ever laughed at in Bay's movies,

The 'radioshack' scene in Bad Boys 2.

Stanley Goodspeed introducing himself to Connery's character in The Rock.

Shit, maybe it´s just me having simplistic tastes, but laughed at most the humour in the Bad Boys movies and The Rock. Heck I can even accept that Armagedon had some nice adult humour.

But the Transformers movies where the ones where he transitioned to simply shitty humour...

If there is anything I like about any of Bay's films is the humor. Yeah, I know too much of it can be racist and just plain stupid. But for example, I think Armageddon would have worked far better as a comedy because when it's funny, it's hilarious. The only one of his flicks where the humor completely fell flat for me was in Revenge of the Fallen.

I completely agree on all counts.
I think the humourous parts in armageddon were surprisingly the parts that worked best.

The humor in "Dark of the Moon" was just as bad.

Not really.

The scenes with Bruce trying to shoot Ben Affleck is nothing like Ken Jeong trapping Shia in a bathroom and all the gay jokes that ensued.
