So..........I had no idea this was coming:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFZ2eQ0PpW4

I liked the first one, and I'm certainly not one to say no to Liam Neeson being awesome once again !

Don´t really know how to feel about this one.On one hand, it´s Liam Neeson being imensly badass, just like the first one, and I love that one.

On the other hand another "taking" is a bit stale. But fuck it, I endured repetition on the Bourne movies, can do the same here.

At first I had no interest in this, and thought they should have left it with the first one.

Then I saw the trailer, and now I want to see this.

I think we can all agree that if they go for a third one, they should cut it with the kidnappings

But it looks promising, the first one was very entertaining, and this one might have a chance at being better !

I deliberately skipped the first one. The trailer gave me the impression it was towelhead-bashing racist claptrap of the first order (Old man says 'dont go to towelhead-land, daughter, they will rape you'... she goes anyway, old guy was right, goes and kills towelheads. Gimme a fiucking break) and I gave it a wide, wide berth.

Dafuq, since when does France equate to "towel-head country"? Plus, it was a easter european mob the bigger antagonist. Yeah there were the middle eastern dude buying druged chicks, but let´s not talk as if it´s that far from some dark realities...

I wouldn't trust Liam Neeson to save me anymore after watching The Grey.

One word: context.

Even in context, Liam Neeson's character sucked in The Grey.

That movie taught me to be more discerning when it comes to people who seem like they know what they're doing.

But in The Grey, he was just a sniper that almost killed himself. In Taken he's an ex-agent who has a specific set of skills used to find and kill people, if necessary.

So yeah, context you bitch.

Well, being just a suicidal sniper, he shouldn't have ordered everyone around like he knew what he was doing.

Context is a double edged sword, biatch.

From having the trailer beat me around the head with right-wing reactionary shittiness in a cinema.

The fear-mongering is on mark, sorry.
'Don't go overseas', says Dad, 'you will be abducted by bad non-Americans! the world outside post 9-11 USA is full of scary jabbering evil types!'
Of course, old codger CIA-dad is right, and has to go Rambo-ing his way unstoppably through the hordes in his righteous bad-ass way.

My tongue is in my cheek a bit, but I have been living in third-world muslim countries on and off for a while. Beat-em-up cinema where the west is right and the world outside is to be feared don't earn the endorsement of my price of admission.

Ok fear-mongering is fair, but any connection to Muslims really is way off mark, for a start the daughter is kidnapped in Paris by the Albanian Mafia for sex-trafficking.
yes there are quite a lot of Muslims in Albania, but Albania is actually a secular country, and sex-trafficking is the last thing Albanian Muslims would be involved in, besides the fact that the Albanian Mafia is probably the most powerful criminal organisation in France, are probably the largest sex-trafficking organisation in Europe it's not surprising that they were chosen as the antagonists.
Also the movie was Written by Luc Besson, and directed by Pierre Morel not some flag waving Americans.

I'm not saying you are wrong about the general direction modern action movies have gone since 9/11, because you are right, but I am saying don't judge a movie on it's trailer alone, and this is one of the exceptions, not one of the rule followers.

I'll give this another viewing, but I kind of have to side with Avatar here, I don't think Neeson's character was saying "Beware the towelheads!" more than he was saying "You're too fucking young to be traveling on your own!".

I mean, it's not like we were being bludgeoned into the head about the ethnicities of the characters, I only knew some of them had to be from some part of the balkans, and the "final baddie" could've been from ANYWHERE, his nationality is never specified.

I'm enjoying the hell out of someone finally criticizing Taken.

That's kinda my point right there. My 'towelheads' reference was just that, a term that is an indicator of western post 9-11 tendencies to generalise when it comes to the baddies in foreign countries. Most of the audience were most likely not making any distinction, because their convictions were being played to and not challenged.

I will give it a look if it comes up on HBO Movies or summink.

And 'Ziller.... shup!
