Baz Luhrmann's directing a new Great Gatsby film to come out December of this year, in case you're not hep to the jive.

I don't think I've seen any of his films apart from Moulin Rogue, but I enjoyed it. I also really enjoyed the novel. And it's going to star Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire.

I'm hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.

Baz Luhrman has a tendency for incredibly annoying excess. The fact that he's shooting this film in 3D only proves my point.

I don't know anything about Baz Luhrmann, but I feel like it's a perfectly legitimate opinion to think that 3D should be utilized in non-action films.

Well, as I said, the only movie of his that I sat down and watched was Moulin Rouge. That's just one movie and, hopefully, The Great Gatsby isn't a crazy musical full of bright colors, dance numbers, and cover songs.

Ziller, go watch his production of Romeo + Juliet and tell me my worries are unfounded.

I've seen parts of it, but I don't think there's anything to suggest The Great Gatsby'll be a radical re-imagining like that was.

I actually like Luhrmann's work...until Australia which was completely awful. Great looking? Yeah, but awful. I don't mind his directorial style per se, but I do question if its a good fit with this story. As for the 3D, well, it's not like I have to watch it like that.

Yeah I gotta say this movie does not scream Baz at all, and until I see something that changes my mind I'm going to continue asking "WTF was this studio smoking?"

Also, I'm definitely seeing it in 3D

Carey Mulligan.

That should be MORE than enough reason to watch this film !

As I said on Facebook. I don't understand them moving "Gravity" to next year instead of this. Because this looks terrible in every way. Half-assed acting from a great cast, a style that doesn't fit its subject matter at all. And watching the trailer I see absolutely no indication of it having to be shot in 3D at all. This will be the biggest bomb of 2012.

Point of order: That title is going to John Carter. No way is any other film this year going to lose more money than that one did. But I digress.

It's a damn shame this movie is going to suck so hard, because the cast is phenomenal. Even if Joel Edgerton had to step in for Ben Affleck, he's still a fine choice for the role. Additionally, if I had to cast an adaptation of the film at this exact moment in time, I'd be extremely hard-pressed to find three lead actors better-suited for their roles than Leo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire.

Such a pity, then, that it's Baz Luhrman directing. In his own way, the man's style of filmmaking is every bit as annoying and void of subtlety as Michael Bay. The thought of Luhrmann behind a 3D camera absolutely frightens me.

Indeed, the trailer shows me a movie that's all style and no story, an adaptation totally unworthy of such an important work in the history of American literature. It's clearly being positioned as an awards contender, but there's so much great Oscar competition this year that it's bound to get blown out of the water. I could see it picking up a nomination for costume design, though, and possibly production design as well.
