Enjoying this. It's being finally shown on one of the regular TV-channels here in Sweden so this thread topic might seem a little stale to most of you.

It's a real mish-mash of themes alright. But it contains some lovely moments: The cheerleader waking up in the morgue, or when the politician escapes his kidnappers by flying.

BTW, that flying sequence had me gob-smacked. Woww, I said to myself. Until then we'd seen him fumbling after his brother in a backyard, and I was wary as to how they'd lift him over a fence to safety. Oh but no. *Bang* and off the guy went like a bat out of hell. Cool. :) (Though at that speed, he'd have lost his pyjama bottoms I guess.

I have read that the creator, when putting together his plot, was unaware of it's similarities to other novels/comics. Whatever. The result is very enjoyable.

They say the same thing about Lost. Some of the similarities there are married characters named Bernard and Rose, a secret island, a deadly scheme to save humanity, and lots of flashbacks used in many episodes.

I heard that the creator of Heroes is a big Watchmen-fan and this is quite obvious, especially in the early episodes. One of the main characters are a watchmaker, exactly as his father was before him and I they had a similar conversation as Dr. Manhattan had with his father, and Dr. Manhattan and the character in Heroes turns out to get extraordinary powers...

This is from an episode, you all know what it is...

I've only recently begun to watch the show. I figured I might as well check it out and see what everyone is talking about even though I'm pretty late getting onboard. I have to say the show is amazingly...bad. I don't know if it gets any better as the season goes on, but so far (5 episodes in) its pretty painful. Every episode so far is relying heavily on the gimmicky cliff-hangers. All the characters are so cliched and one-dimensional. It really wasn't what I was expecting.

i got bored watching the first few episodes, but when it finally rolled out and it turn out to be not so bad, albeit the rip-offs from watchmen.

**SPOILERS!** (since some of you guys haven't seen it yet)

elements taken from watchmen:
1) "attack" in new york
2) Sylar's a watchmaker
3) Scene where sylar visted her mom, and re-create a snow globe
4) Teleportation
5) tragedy for the greater good of humanity. yada yada yada.

add as u wish...

In the episode that image is from, Hiro gets to meet a mysterious "japanese" man that has had the hapless pair obducted.

It's Sulu from Star Trek! And it's his dad. Oh, that was cool. :-)

Tim Kring has stated that no comic book mythology was an influence for the show. The core was ordinary people being gifted and learning how to cope with the unknown. ;)

I didn't see the series originally, but I'm catching up thanks to the magic of DVD. (I avoid TV because I think most of it is unmitigated CRAP.) My wife are totally sucked into the first season.

No, but he doesn't write the series. I'm not familiar with the writers, but I noticed that Jeph Loeb has production credits and co-wrote at least one episode. If the rest of the staff writers are fanboys/girls, they couldn't help but be influenced by comic history.

BTW Hiro's "I did it" when he first teleports into NY is pure Watchmen.

I DVR'd the first 12 episodes of the first season, so I've seen those so far (so no spoilers, please!)

But one gigantic Watchmen parallel is a "hero" who is a watchmaker, and his father was a watchmaker. The only difference is the father encouraged him to follow in his footsteps.

There's also a lot of clock and watch metaphors, too.

Another, non-Watchmen nod happened when Hiro calls Japan after a time jump back six months and gets himself on the phone. When he realizes he's talking to himself, he slams the phone down and in his heavy Japanese accent shouts "Great Scott!" a la Dr. Brown in Back to the Future. I got a kick out of that.

For a show following a completely original story, it sure sounds a lot like X-Men. People start developing powers, people try coping with powers, people with powers go up against eachother, etc. Yeah, very original

It seems to me that Heroes is the poor mans version of the X-Men

Well, I'm finally caught up with every episode. It does have X-Men themes. There's even a "company" that is working on a "cure."

But what seperates it from X-Men are all of the heroes are more "human." No Mystique or Beast looking mutants. And, they're not organized. Everyone is just a person trying to figure out why they have powers. Sometimes they work together for a time by chance or by plan.

But now that I've seen every episode, its not a Watchmen rip-off. I wouldn't even call it a de-construction.

Careful.

I'm still in season 1.

Dumbass Suresh pinned to the ceiling while Peter Petrelli gets a new haircut from Sylar.

Soup, I split season 2 talk into a new topic. This way nobody has to worry about cross-season spoilers.
