Just have to say I'm very impressed by everyone's costumes so far. They are all very good! :) And THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone who posted any kind of help - it all came in handy!

Here is my shot at it:

The mask is the 3-nylon method that was mentioned earlier in the thread. I cut small eye-holes in the black layer and they are barely or not even visible. I photoshopped the design, printed it, and used a box cutter to make it into a stencil, I then stretched the mask over a clipboard, using binder-clips to stretch it out. Then I just filled it in with a sharpie. This works quite well if you don't have someone else to draw it for you.

I got the hat, scarf, trench coat and the dark purple/navy-blue pinstripe suit (not visible) at Value Village/Savers. The purple ribbon for the hat was from Michael's, an arts/crafts supply store.

I had old black leather gloves and black dress shoes that are similar enough to his boots to work. The pants will be over them all the time anyway! :P

I will definitely find a better trench coat, boots, and spend more time on the mask for next Halloween but, still being in highschool, my budget was quite small this year (Everything was about $60). Although, I am pleased how everything came together :)

That looks awesome! Lovin the ink blot design. Now everywhere you go you're gonna be seeing a dog with its head split open. Lol.

Wow, all these costumes are awesome.

Question for others who have drawn on the design with Sharpie - has anyone had problems with it bleeding over into the white?

ALSO! any tips on the nylons mask? Should I use the toe end or the thigh end and any specific tips on cutting/sewing it?

Anybody have any advice on this? I'm not good at sewing so I'd prefer to use the toe end if possible.

What are you guys' thoughts? Time is running out!

Hahaha

The world will be a darker place when I have it on

As for the sharpie question, it smudged a bit on mine and some of it got on the 2nd white nylon below it but I'm guessing its mostly because I was too eager to try it on before it had fully dried :D

I used a family member as a test monkey and I didn't really notice the smudges. It even kind of gives the mask a darker tone IMO

I asked for tips from my mom and gf on sewing and they both think that since the hat is going to be on 1 seam with white thread at the very top won't be too noticable, however, if you're good with a needle or sewing machine I would look at diagrams of luchador masks and try it that way.

Here's the final result of my costume all put together. I wore this to my work's Halloween event two days in a row where kids got in free if they wore a costume. I work at an ice arena as a Zamboni driver, and we have kids and parents of all ages coming in and out to play hockey, figure skate, public skate, and so on. Because no one knew who I was on day one (but 3 knew on day two!), the kids kept calling me The Creepy Guy :)

I even drove the Zam with my mask on...all I could see was shiny (wet ice) and dull (carved ice), but that's all I need to see to do my job! hehe

I had trouble keeping the scarf and collar up on day one, but figured out how to tie it better and make the collar stick better on day two. I also didn't realize I had to detach the little left shoulder strap until the second day...these photos were taken on the first day, so please excuse my messed up/missing subtleties:

I'll be sure to get better pictures will all the subtleties in place sometime this weekend.

So I'm still going with Rorschach, although the other characters backed out (can't blame 'em, tall order for Halloween costumes!).

I'm using stuff I already have, so it won't be as authentic as those I've seen here. Amazing costumes!

I'll post a vid of the results; I think it captures the spirit of the character at least. I'm quite happy with my mask!

I must remember to set up a special Halloween thread for all the pictures of Watchmen costumes.

Great idea, Curi. Maybe even a Halloween post on the main site? Maybe?

Okay, so the high quality video took forever to upload- here's a lower res version.

NO DIGITAL EFFECTS ON THE MASK! :D

PS- I plan on shaving my beard before Halloween.

It's a shame the effect isn't clearer.

Even so, how the hell did you do that?!

Moisture/heat affects a layer of something under the fabric.

Very close...

I appreciate any feedback on the way this looks!

What is the point of even posting in this thread if you're not going to say how you did it?

The whole reason I created this thread is so other Rorschach costumers could share tips...

But wouldn't something like that be hard to breathe through? You'd need something like nylon to be able to breathe and see.
That mask is cool, but it was really hard to see the change in color. I thought it was just shadow cast from his hat.

just a wild guess but it's liquid in a sealed container that when a vacuum is applied on the inside it makes it stand out and when released it discolors.

Kinda like when you stick your hand in a white plastic bag and dip that into a bucket of water. It sticks to your hand because of pressure and makes the color change.

I do give you credit though, very ingenuous. Could you use a thinner top to make the black (dark) come through more?

Sorry, I just feel a bit protective (and proud)of my work at this point.

Nobody's got the technique yet!

Apologies if I come across as a "show off", I 'm just really excited about it.
