As far as the movie being a "cult classic" and it's legacy and I think we're starting to see some of that now.

I've made the rounds of the big stores around here in Vancouver: Future Shop, Best Buy, etc. and ALL of them are currently sold out of the Director's Cut of the film. The Theatrical Cut is gathering dust on their shelves and is already marked down but both the 2-disc standard DVD and the Blu-Ray Director's Cut are completely sold out at present.

I'm not talking about the steelbook version, which sold out because ebay sellers snatched them all up to sell to fans in the US (that version simply does not exist on store shelves anymore) or the more expensive Best Buy Rorschach edition (which is awesome) but rather the "plain" versions of the Director's Cut. It's gone! Sold out!

Now of course most of those sales are from actual WATCHMEN fans but the rate in which it sold out (in a month) seems to be in contrast with the "weak" box office. I made the rounds the day the thing was released and stores shelves were packed with copies. 30-40 copies per store. Now they are sold out. So the Director's Cut must be doing something right. The movie has already found new life. Even my local video store is selling off their copies of the Theatrical Cut while the few copies of the Director's Cut (Blu-ray) they have are constantly rented out.

All of this interest will generate a word of mouth effect. Wheels are in motion...

I didn't see the kid but I saw one with a couple that wanted to laugh and feast and I'm like, "Uhhh good luck with the laughs part." Also, the movie seemed to jump from the tenement fire to the scene in Karnak where Ozymandias catches the bullet. They ought to get that looked at.

you can see the couple's child sitting to the left of the mother (our right) when the camera focuses on the whole sitting on the couch.

I just saw it again. It's pretty funny how the kid is just in the last shot sitting there.

This fan trailer was uploaded a few days ago. I think it's one of the best fan trailers I've ever seen. Something along these lines would have given audiences a more accurate impression of what to expect: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TAfuPgEy_o

That was amazing. Much, MUCH better than the misleading bullshit I saw in theatres.

I think the best marketing, that would have approached audiences in the right way, would have been to play up the mystery aspect of it - who killed the Comedian? Is there a mask-hunter out there? And slowly reveal the world of Watchmen through glimpses in the trailer.
