Now that the film has come out, do you think the music worked, and if you had your choice, what would you have in the soundtrack?

I don't know about specific scene, but I would definitely include Messian's "Quartet for the End of Time." It is an absolute apocalyptic masterpiece.

I think that what i've herd of the soundtrack that its gonna be pretty good but if I had the choise I'd add Mad World By Gary Jules and almost any Nox Arcana song could fit.

Neither of those are period or fitting, really.

I thought it was all great. Don't think I'd change anything.

I thought everything was great. Only song I'd change is the first song that played during the credits, and I don't even know what I'd change it to. Anything, really.

The music was great. Thought it was all well placed and appropriate; I also think it enhanced the scenes, rather than taking away from them or being utterly pointless. My only problem is that some of the songs from the movie aren't on the Soundtrack Album.

First off there is a lot of bad talk toward the use of three particular things:

1) Bates original score: Criticism is that it sounds like porn music. I feel bad for those who think that because they don't have a good working knowledge of the 80's cinema or music. The tough, gritty feel was very 80's classic to me and the score emphasized that even more. The tones were definitely an homage to Vangelis and his work on Blade Runner. The sax and synth combo's were excellent and fit into the scenes where it was used.

2) The use of the Sound of Silence: Criticism is that quite simply isn't used in a scene where anything happens. People were looking for a Graduate type use of it. That scene is slow and meticulous drawing out the cemetery and the backdrop of New York. I enjoyed the use but when I first heard they were using it I was hoping for Laurie and Manhattan to arrive in a bloody and battered NYC with nothing but the wind howling and then cuts in and outside of building with bodies scattered everywhere with the Sound of Silence playing.

3) The use of All Along the Watchtower: Criticism is that it's a song geared toward Vietnam in a movie that has a Vietnam scene (s) in it so why use it when they are heading towards an ice sanctuary. The lyrics match Viedt's gaze over the world and Dan and R's hunt for the truth but I would have to agree and say it felt out of place.

The best part of the score was something in the background in the Lee Ioccoca (sp) scene. A slow instrumental version of Everybody Wants to Rule the World plays almost as elevator music. It was fucking brilliant and added to the 80's tone and of course the indictment of Ozymandias.

I really can't complain about the soundtrack. I enjoyed all of it. The use of Unforgettable at the beginning was great and I loved that tune, I think its "I love you, mom" in the soundtrack, where there is this pull-back showing Veidt's new New York.

The score for me was a case of "Green Eggs & Ham". I was put off by the "Prison Break" sample online, but totally dug the score watching the film .

I don't really buy soundtracks ever, but I bought both the score and the soundtrack for this movie.(and not just cause it was Watchmen, I just genuinely liked both a ton.)

Agreed on the Messiaen. It would've been quite spectacular.

Penderecki's 'Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima' would be awesome, but I don't know where would be appropriate. Maybe Rorschach and the Blair Roche case, when he becomes frantic about chopping the guy? For those who haven't heard: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzOb3UhPmig

My only complaint that maybe the score wasn't long enough. There was a lot of silence and some music could have tied some scenes together...

Best music/scene fusions (I dunno the correct term I'm looking for):

1) "The Times They Are A-Changing" by Bob Dylan over the opening credits montage. The combination of song and images was just beautiful and I nearly teared up.

2) "Unforgettable" by Nat King Cole playing over the Comedian/Ozymandias fight scene. Hauntingly good, and I just knew from then on the film was in safe hands.

3) "All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix as Rorschach and Dan approach Karnak. "Somewhere in the distance a wild cat did growl, two riders were approaching and the wind began to howl." 'Nuff said.

4) The porno-theme version of "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen. Simply hilarious, I don't care what anyone says.

I agree that Mad World would be excellent.

The ending credits song was a bit much, but it was alright. 99 Red Balloons was completely random though. Yeah, I get what it means, but it was ridiculous.

Everything else was excellent, including Bob Dylan, the Sound of Silence, and Hendrix.

Save for "Ride of the Valkyries", which did have some relevance to Watchmen, I thought all the existing music worked quite well. "Sounds of Silence" took me a minute to figure out why they were using it, as did "Hallelujah", but both were fantastic in the scene. The great thing is, like the book, a lot of this music, you have to think about its relevance to the time periods and the themes. "All Along the Watchtower" is one of these as well. As is "99 Luftballoons", which also worked really, really well to set the tone given its themes and social relevance.

[NOTE: This post started its own thread before I merged it here. --"Curiosity Inc."]

I was a little disappointed with the music in the movie, just seem out of place in a couple scenes (i.e. sex scene).
What do you all think.

"Ride of The Valkyries" ties back to "Under The Hood" as the saddest thing Hollis has ever known. Gave it a nice extra layer of meaning during the Vietnam scene.

I can't hear "Mad World" without thinking about that Gears of War commercial that ran 35 times an hour a few years ago. That song belongs to "Donnie Darko."
