Anyway, Oscar, you mention getting work might be difficult in the U.S., but would it be that far-fetched to try to go to school and work in L.A. or something? I mean, if you absolutely can't find work, then it's probably not plausible, but I don't actually know if you've tried or just discounted it beforehand. Honestly, though, that sounds like your best bet. The way you describe Mexico's situation seems precarious at best and I have to imagine things would be a little more stable over there in Hollywood or elsewhere.

In any case, two things are clear. 1) Fuck El Paso. 2) Fuck Juarez.

What keeps me from doing an MFA in LA is this: Money.

School is way too damn expensive in the US. The one I go to happens to be one of the cheapest ones and it still puts quite a dent in the pockets of my family and me.

Well, the way you describe it, it sounds like your only real option is to go to school somewhere in Mexico that's not Juarez.

I remember you telling me you were thinking of Canadian schools, although I don't know how expensive they are compared to U.S schools. I think being an international student either way you're going to have to pay up. Anyway, you may find something here: http://www.canadianfilm.com/schools/ontario.html

And if Oscar went to school in Ontario, the three of us could hang out in a bar sometime and regale each other of all the times we attempted to best the Flash in battle.

Well, the Flash's self-named "Rogues" hang out together in bars and stuff like buddies.

Kind of a vague joke, no?

Gaaah, for some reason the hotel I'm staying in right now (I'm on a trip) has that site blocked. I'll have to wait until sunday or monday to check it out.

If anything, being on the road and talking it over with my parents has made me realize that staying in El Paso would be the most unlikeable but most reasonable choice. For now. Apparently I could still work while taking classes outside my degree, but I'd have to ask the Office of International Programs, which I'll do once I get back from my trip. So I could stay there for some 8 months after I graduate, pay my rent and then move on to my MFA and work from there if I'm given a Teaching Assistance job.

But you know what they say, don't put all your eggs in one basket. I think the best choice for me would be to apply for as much schools and jobs as possible and see where it goes. I have already checked some Canadian schools and they are pricey, but I'll see if there were any I missed from t3cii's link when I get a chance.

Really it's just a bunch of links for every college/university for every province that has a film program of some kind. It tells you what programs are available, but it doesn't really give a critic or or review, and chances are you have checked most of these schools out already.

How are they compared to the U.S schools? I always thought they would be less expensive, but with you being an international student, it might be more expensive.

I would say that the costs for international students are less than the ones for american schools, but it's too much for my family and me.

I just checked the site t3cii linked me to, and sadly, he's right. Pretty much the ones that interested me I had already checked out.

This whole situation is very frustrating because I feel like I've spent the last four years or so trying to get out of here, only to get stuck in the same place again. But I can also see why ending up would be the most reasonable option. I'd have a job set up, a place to live and familiar people to be with and work with. So maybe I'm not looking at the advantages of it. And if I don't get accepted to the program, then I'll end up in other place where I could actually want to be but perhaps not with those advantages. Graduating isn't all it's cracked up to be. I almost don't feel like going to my ceremony because of the chance I will be in the same school again within a few months afterwards. But I also feel I should use it to celebrate somehow.

For a few days, I haven't been able to visit this forum without thinking that I can't pretend like it's perfectly fine to just browse around talk about nerd shit with the kind of burden I'm carrying at the moment.

My father died this wednesday, he had a heart attack at our previous apartment in Venezuela.

So, life is just sucking too much right now.

I don't know if I'll be able to log in for the next two weeks, I'm flying back home for the funeral arrangements, hence why I had to tell godziller that I won't be meeting the miracleman group later tonight, things are just too.............complicated at the moment.

Jeez, man. There's really not much to say to that, but you know you can always talk to us, whether it be about nerd things or not.

I hope things get better for you and your family. I know the death of a loved one has got to be a terrible thing to deal with and we'll definitely miss you while you're gone.

Oh man, Feliciano. I'm so sorry to hear that. I know words can't suffice for this kind of thing. So just know I'm behind you. It's horrible that this happened.

Thank you guys, really.

Still, like I said, I don't know if I'll be able to log in, maybe I will, but I'm not sure I'll be having internet connection when I get there, nevertheless, I appreciate your support guys, thanks again.

That sucks, I can't imagine what that's like, my uncle died a month or so ago, but I didn't really know him that well, and he was on the way out for ages so it was inevitable at that point, so it's not the same at all, but do what you need to do, and good luck at the funeral and we'll see you back here when you get back
