[NOTE: Merged. --"Curiosity Inc."]

So it looks like the new Superman film is being called The Man of Steel (if it seems to familar to The Dark Knight it's not surprising since Chris and Jonah Nolan as well as David Goyer are working on it) and DC wants it to be released on Christmas 2012.

DC also has apparently figure out how they'll connect these DC films into an inevitable Justice League film. I thought the explanation for it was pretty interesting:

Quote:
Batman Begins is being referred to as Action Comics #1 where Batman is the only superhero around at that time, and the same goes for The Dark Knight, or rather Action Comics #2. And so coming down the line would be Green Lantern as Action Comics #3, and it is in this installment that there are apparently talks happening to make reference to Gotham City, and maybe even Batman himself. As far as Superman, he's around, but in this chronology he would still only be a young Clark Kent in the town of Smallville.

So I guess that begs the question: Will we be seeing a much more realistic interpretation of Superman, much in the same way Batman was portrayed in the Nolan movies?

That's been the tentative title since Superman Returns. Still, sounds better than having Superman in the title.

I don't want this or Green Lantern to be in the same universe as Nolan's movies because that just sucks any realism the Batman movies have away. Don't get me wrong, a crossover would be cool. It's just that I like the semi-plausibility those films carry. No superpowers and everything.

Also, I'm not too excited for this. I'm completely bored by Superman at this point.

I would like a new superman film, but I don't necessarily think that Nolan is the right man for the job. I think it needs to be fun, and more action packed, as Superman Returns was too long, too anti climatic and too dull. I want a stronger villain than the way Luther was portrayed in Superman Returns, and I want some more tension. I don't think that making it dark or realistic is necessarily the right fix for the franchise. I think injecting a bit of fun in to it again (a la Iron Man). And I think that weaving it all in to one Justice League film would be crap. I don't see how Nolan's take on the Batman universe is going to fit in with <insert director of GL movie here>'s take on the GL universe. This is beginning to sound like a mess to me, but I would love a good superman film.

Nolan has gone on to say that he will approach it the same way he has approached the Batman films: By making him the only superhero in the world. Or the only person with superpowers, something like that.

DC has stated they plan to mingle everyone into a Justice League movie, so what I'm guessing is we're going to get some sort of Iron Man credit scene, where Nick Fury breaks into his house and tells him he's not alone. Of course I would prefer if they made Superman into a government weapon first before he goes into the league.

I know enough. I'm no Superman amateur or anything if that's what you mean. It's just that I've had enough. I've gotten all I could out of the character.

So, let me get this straight: WB wants to work toward fusing their DC movies into a single universe. Nolan, however, wants to keep the DC characters in their own separate franchises. I know that Nolan's concerned about the integrity of his movies and WB isn't in much of a position to contradict Mr. #3 Highest Box Office Grosser In History, but they'll simply have to.

Marvel's long-term thinking in film development has paid off well for them. The inevitable Avengers crossover has given Marvel films a huge amount of momentum while DC's movie lineup has grown stagnant. This is made all the more embarrassing upon the recollection that Marvel didn't have a single live-action movie released last year and DC has had the might of fucking Warner Bros. Studios for the past few decades. And Marvel's advantage is only going to grow stronger as more properties come back to them from Fox and Sony, and they'll really be a force to reckon with after Disney throws its muscle behind them.

It really is "sink or swim" time for the higher-ups at DC and they know it. If they're going to remain as viable competition against Marvel, they need to start cribbing from their opponent's playbook and they need to start two years ago. Sorry, Nolan, but there comes a time in every filmmaker's career when he has to make concessions for commercial good and that time is now.

Erm, wouldn't Wolverine count as a Marvel film?

Also, the only Superman stuff I've actually read was Superman: Doomsday. Honestly, that's all I needed. Growing up and watching the tv shows (Batman & Superman Adventures, Superman TAS, Justice League) was plenty for me. I've still never even seen the Christopher Reeve film (planning to). I've only seen Superman Returns, and didn't care much for it, though it did have good acting and effects and stuff.

No. Fox owns Wolverine, Marvel has nothing to do with those movies, or the X-Men in general.

i kind of agree with godziller, supes is pretty boring. but what isn't boring is his rogues gallery, and in the movies they keep insisting on using the most boring characters!! it's always bloody lex friggin luther,

i guess they just want an element of realism in their villains, although if you have the man of steel i don't see why they don't have like bizarro or braniac (which kind of seems realistic, basically HAL in a body) something.

I agree with his agreement. I haven't actually read much Superman but I grew up watching the DC animated universe shows and I've seen the movies.

Also, METALLO!!!

Looks perfectly fine to me.

I notice that he doesn't quite have the full underwear look, but maybe that's a good thing.
