So there was a bit of a riot in Toronto this afternoon:

For those of you who might not know, the G20 Summit was taking place in Toronto this weekend. Due to really dumb planning, the summit was (is) being held at the Toronto Metro Convention Centre, the same convention centre that usually is host to comic conventions. What makes the planning dumb is that the Convention Centre is close to a very busy subway line, close to the CN Tower and Rogers Centre (home of the Blue Jays), and just generally an awkward location. A huge perimeter was set up around it, with tons of cops and a big iron fence. I can't help but think a more secluded location might have been available and a lot of this mess could have been avoided.

The day started off miserably enough with some rain. I had no real reason to go out today besides boredom. Thankfully I wasn't anywhere near the main protests, but knowing what I would later find out once I got home, I would have stayed home. While I think most of the protests going on were peaceful, a large group of black clad morons decided to wage war on on the downtown core, setting fire to two police cars, and vandalizing a few stores (mostly American owned) and restaurants, breaking windows, and causing their own dumb form of mayhem (nothing says rebellion like kicking in an American Apparel window  ).

The mall I was on my way to had to be shut down about 10 minutes after I got there, with several main exits being blocked off (this might not sound like much, but this is a rather large shopping mall). Subway service was shut down past that location, meaning I had to walk back to a further station. And to top it all off I came near close to being hit by a Greyhound bus, which I think had been commandeered by the police. I thought I had stepped back from the curb pretty far, but apparently not far enough. A cop pulled me back from behind just as it drove ((zoomed) around the corner. I don't think it had any chance of hitting me, but it was still a bit of a jolt, and a bit embarrassing to say the least.

About 75 people have been arrested, with possibly more to follow. The G20 ends tomorrow. Hopefully with the city in one piece.

Well, Damn! I don't know what to say except...Damn!!!

I'm glad you're alright. Things sure are interesting in the city. Not always a good thing, though.

Sorry, but that's what I think of every time I hear that phrase.

I am also glad you're alright.

But, since I'm terribly ignorant of the world, I had to look up what the G20 Summit is. I know know it's basically a meeting for a bunch of banks, but I'm have no idea the reason for the protests. Is it economic? Do they not like the banks/what the banks are doing?

Lol. But most people don't riot over it. They want to though....

Yeah, but fortunately most people aren't complete idiots. There's always the minority, though.

Hey, when you want something, you light cars on fire. That's how it's always been, and it's worked great so far.

The G20 is comprised of heads of government. So Obama, Sarkozy, Harper, all those guys. I'm sure there are a number of reasons why there are protests, but I suspect the more violent ones have to do with the fact that there is a large police presence in the down town core, which some protesters have claimed are intimidating, and the fact so much money was spent on security, among other possible reasons. Really I think it's just a bunch of 20 somethings with too much time on their hands and too much misplaced anger.

About 130 have been arrested so far. I imagine most businesses will be closed tomorrow and I'm sure most people will stay away from the downtown until the Summit is over and things go back to normal.

Me too. One word of advice, though. If you're intimidated by police, don't attack them. Just move along. Move along...

And I want that shirt.

The reason they protest is the same as the summit last year in whateverthefuck, PA. it's a location that's in the middle of nowhere, why would you have the world leaders meet in a little nobody town? (no offense to toronto)

I don't get it. You think they're protesting because they want their summit to be in a more representative location? Also, are you implying that Toronto is squaresville? Because I disagree.

Holy hell....
Those photos are INSANE.

There was a G something summit in London last year, and there was rioting too, but nothing like this. The police were actually accused of killing someone and using unnecessary force here. I hope that David Cameron is dead.

I don't really, but I still don't like him

Because if you have them all meet in a big city that's more likely to be a large protest and possible terrorist attack. In a small place that people haven't heard of odds are that terrorists trying to wipe out world leaders haven't heard of it either, ergo there would be no major attack plans concerning Buttfuck, Nowhere. (Present city of Toronto excluded)

furthermore, I think a lot of this has to do with people getting fed up with government making promises that the people making them know they can't keep. The economic situation of the world is not a result of the people, but of their governments, Because governments economies aren't controlled by their banks, but by their governments. I have a feeling this is about government overstepping themselves and what better way to show disdain for government than by protesting at a gathering of 20 of the worlds leaders?

Because, as we all know, "People should not be afraid of their governments... Governments should be afraid of their people"
