But then again, is there any other kind?

Yes. Arguing in squares

Er, because that's not true. You have, though.

Who says it's not true - you? I keep forgetting - you're so much more intelligent than the rest of us mere mortals.. I mean what are the chances of a director misinterpreting his source materiel - that'd NEVER happen would it?! I mean Zack Snyder got it bang on didn't he? Hence the most acclaimed GN of all time became one of the most enduring, critically and publically acclaimed films of all time, and.... oh, wait; no it didn't.

It's a bit hard to make that kind of judgement after a mere year isn't it?
Just accept the fact that some people like the scene.
It's okay that you hate the scene and feel violent hatred towards anyone who likes it and tries to explain to you why they like it but.... oh, wait; no it isn't.
It's just a scene in a movie. It's not like AYB stole your girlfriend. Grow the fuck up. Feel free to express your opinion, but don't be a nazi asshole about it.

Are you quite serious?! He hasn't had a Top Ten album in the UK since the 60's/very early 70's and has had ONE single chart in the UK; funnily enough that was 'Hallelujah', which charted at the same time as the Alexandra Burke No 1 and the Jeff Buckley version - Cohen's original just scraped into the top 40.

Just as a rough guide, the Official Leonard Cohen Community has just over 22,000 members WORLDWIDE. Yeah - EVERYBODY knows Leonard...

No, I feel 'violent hatred' to people who dismiss my opinion as 'blathering bullshit' out of hand without any real justification, or people who write off a majority of people who don't agree with them as 'idiots'...

Theres nothing wrong with expressing your opinion, but being a fucking dick about it and bumping a long dead thread is just lame.
Do you see me bumping the Shoot the Shit thread? NO!
because there's no goddamn reason!

-edit-
top of the pile? the last post before you ressurected it was in AUGUST, you must've been really inactive to have THIS thread the top of your pile.
In all honesty when i saw it bumped i was curious, but then to read your pointless rant, i felt like my time was wasted.
So seriously, why did you feel the need to continue an ancient arguement? bi-polar much?

I'm just pissed that idiots feel the need to drop into a thread and criticise someone for resurrecting a thread and not actually contribute anything constructive.

Please remind me when it was I came round to your house and forced you to read this thread and post in it at gunpoint. What's that - you can't?

Also, please point me to where I came in and began insulting people. What's that - you can't? Then fuck off.

Well maybe I should have gone to google and searched for "leonard cohen chart success" and "Official Leonard Cohen Community Membership" to back up my argument, but it appears that you've beat me to it.
All I know is that everybody I know knows who he is, I often hear buskers covering his songs, and his concert which isn't happening here for a couple of months is already entirely sold out. It's a big venue and I live in a very small state.

I feel like this thread should be locked lest it turn into an even bigger flame war.

It's pointless, anyway.

Erm.. it's not really that hard to make that judgement at all; I read a lot of film and media magazines and talk films on lots of forums apart from this one. At the end of last year the only mentions 'Watchmen' was getting (if any) were either for the title sequence, or as a buzzword for 'folly'; the only time it appeared in the usual 'End of Year' Lists was much the same reasons. The majority of forums I go on are all in agreement; flawed/missed opportunity, etc, as are most of the people I have talked with about the film. Yes, I am aware none of this 100% conclusively proves anything, but it doesn't take a genius to see where the general concensus is going.

So AYB is OK to call anyone who HE thinks 'didn't understand the Director's intent' for that particular scene an idiot, and I need to grow up and stop being a Nazi?! Fuck's sake...

The UK isn't the US or Canada; we have our own oddball manic depressive-sounding singers thanks; Leonard Cohen pretty much a non-entity in the UK outside of a few 'specialist fans'. And just as I don't speak for the whole of the UK, your general experience in the US speak for the UK even less.

I really don't want to argue with you, because you seem to have an answer for everything, but do you remember the shit that people were saying when Fight Club and Donnie Darko came out?
People also said the same things about Blade Runner and Citizen Kane.
Of course, I'm not comparing Snyder's Watchmen to those films, as I'm not the biggest fan of it, although I did enjoy it, I'm just saying that a year isn't enough time for a film to become "enduring", if it ever does become that.

I'm basing my opinion of 'Watchmen' on over a year and a half's worth of reviews and conversations, magazine and internet comments. Both 'Fight Club' and 'Donnie Darko' were 'underground' or 'cult' phenomena in under a year and a half after release. Maybe 'Watchmen' WILL be a 'cult' film somewhere down the line - it may just take a bit longer; my point is that the signs thus far are not good.

I apologise; I didn't know you were Australian. My general point still stands; Leonard Cohen hasn't been even remotely well-known since the 60's/early 70's in the UK - even then he didn't have a single successful chart single, and the best he did was a (brief) Number 10 album at his most prolific.

I agree with you there, but it also boils down to opinion. Watchmen isn't a piece of shit just because a majority thinks it is.
Scott Pilgrim got mediocre reviews and did badly at the box office, but my friends and I all thought it was fucking awesome.
It takes time to see if it will endure.

But nor is 'Watchmen' good because a minority thinks it is. But we're arguing subjectively now, as you say, which really IS just chasing our tails.

I have not yet seen 'Scott Pilgrim', but every single clip or trailer I have seen suggests that this film is a slice of fried gold; I cannot even begin to understand why it failed commercially.

Just for the record; I don't mind people disagreeing with me or challenging my opinion - it is the manner in which it is done that can anger me.

See the thing is that I actually agree with you about the sex scene, I think it's stupid. I just didn't like the way you were lashing out at people here and getting defensive. However, I didn't actually see the part where AYB called you an idiot, because I actually didn't read his posts because I don't really care about the watchmen movie.

I only lash out if attacked; yes I am very passionate about the film, but I rarely (if ever) resort to just insulting someone who doesn't agree with me.

I don't think there's a big enough wide-eyed smiley to express my shock at the fact that you're posting here and you don't really like the 'Watchmen' film!

More of a GN fan, I take it?

remember slut, this thread has been dead since 2009.
everyone else had moved on.

It's really pointless now, and now i just wish a mod would lock this off and give it the proper burial it shouldve had MONTHS ago.
