Loving the various interpretations, keep them up!

A while back, a friend of mine guiltily admitted she'd never seen the Star Wars films. I said there's nothing she should feel guilty about. That's all I mean when I say it's not a must-see. There are so many films that are artistically and/or culturally more important. You could argue that its popularity and influence make it important. But hey, there are plenty of popular films (Jaws and Close Encounters are a lot more interesting in that regard - the former being the real groundbreaker), and as for influence, well, I don't think anyone can deny that it was itself influenced by a great deal of sources.

Everything an artist does is influenced in one form or another, hell, I could even go as far as saying that all human action cannot escape from any sort of influence.

Would you say Mass Effect is less of a great work of fiction simply because it takes from Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, 2001, etc. ?

I agree, but I'm not saying it affects the film's quality. More that its cultural value has been blown way out of proportion. Mass Effect is a great game, but it'd be a bit much to say it defines the genre - correct? Yet the way fans talk about Star Wars, you'd think it invented Sci-Fi.

See this chain? If someone said the chain's integrity depended upon the red part, they'd be correct. But to say it's the most important part of a long, long chain with many, many links would be erroneous.

And that's just Sci-Fi. When you make the same claim for a medium, with hundreds of parallel, interweaving chains - well, it'd hardly make a difference if that one red link was there or not.

I wouldn't say it's been blown out of proportion, it's contributed a lot to fiction, it redefined the word "Epic" by cranking shit to 11, I would say it's as vital to the Sci-Fi genre as 2001, even though the latter is miles away in terms of what makes the better movie.

But I also wouldn't say it's "the" definitive Sci-Fi movie, if that's what you meant about the way some fans talk about it, certainly there are plenty of other movies to take that spot.

It would, it just wouldn't raise it's importance, like you've said.

Forgive me for trying to steer us back on topic, but I wonder if the same could be said for Watchmen and comic book movies.

Godziller's current favorite thread? I think so.

Anyway, I'll just leave this here and let you people get back on with whatever it is you're getting on about.

1. I have only watched the movie once, in the theatre. I thought it was mediocre when I first saw it. I would have to watch it a second time, or at least see the Director's Cut to give my final opinion on the matter.
2. I think this movie will barely have made a dent in the superhero/comic book movie genre.
3. Is Veidt a repellent?

What?

Your Watchmen movie credentials are both shocking and appalling.

You've killed Feliciano who was nothing short of a friend and a hero. Hopefully, one day I'll see you on the shores of Hades so I can personally wring your neck, you sick perversion of a human being.

Aaaaaand scene.

Yeah, I know, but I didn't make the gif.

First couple of times I read it, I actually managed to unconsciously fill in the "seen" myself, though.

See this chain?

I do, and I am impressed. Did you make it yourself to illustrate your point?

If so, triply-dipply impressed!

^Hmm. That post tastes purple but doesn't look it...

It's the first google image result for 'long chain'. The fact that one part is red was convenient luck.

Honestly I've been thinking about it... and according to your logic Watchmen isn't groundbreaking. Because the characters are archetypes, then it's just another part in the chain and it can't be considered more important than Warrior #1.

That is obviously not the case because Watchmen changed the tone for things to come, despite being based on characters and stories that came before it. The same can be said of Star Wars, despite being influenced by myths and movies before it, the result has changed how sci-fi epics are done, and dare I say it's changed culture in general.
