He's 7 foot 4. Seriously, he doesn't even need to jump. It's probably one of the only sports where height is enough to get you a spot on a team. If you have even the most basic skills, some team is going to sign you if you're that tall, which is why almost none of these guys that tall are great players.

He was rail thin. The average NBA center is usually around seven feet tall. But once you get into the Mark Eaton (the guy in the gif) and Manute Bol territory, you find a lot of them lack physicality. They're usually uncoordinated, and I'd bet many of them have no genuine interest in basketball, but because it's something that can pay extremely well, they do it. Bol averaged very few points a game because he wasn't fast enough, and lacked the power and coordination to really be an effective basketball player. Bol only weighed 200 pounds. I think a lot of these really tall players (and people) also tend to have health problems.

Now that you mention the part about health problems, I remember that chinese man who was at one time the tallest guy in the world, guy had to walk with two canes because he had rheumatism, which apparently is some sort of bone malformation he simply got from sleeping outdoors so often

Yeah, I think the taller you are, the less mobile you become. But if you have the athleticism, then you're almost unstoppable. Shaq is over seven feet tall, but he's also around 300 pounds. Despite not being able to get a free throw to save his life, he was so powerful that when he was in the paint, very few players could defend against him.

As a case in point, meet Greg Oden.

He's seven feet tall, he's my age, and he was the #1 draft pick for the Portland Trail Blazers in 2007. And he's apparently made of glass.

The guy is so injury-prone that he's yet to finish a single season of basketball. He used to be our next great hope for revitalizing the team and getting us back into the finals. Now he's the guy who's out all season before the pre-season games are over.

The moral of the story is: There's a reason why human beings aren't usually that tall.
