In fact, the costume designers do indeed appear to have gone back to "the original" look for their inspiration, circa Dredd's first appearance in 1977 to be exact before certain aspects of the character's uniform - specifically both shoulder pads - became impractically exaggerated over the years (along with the chin!). Here's the first Dredd to see print as rendered by Mike McMahon, replacing original artistic creator Carlos Ezquerra yet able to copy his style virtually precisely and hired for that reason:

The screenplay circulated online for this latest film version depicts Dredd as being a more straightforward shoot 'em up action hero in much the same way as the character was portrayed in the first few years of the 2000AD comic strip, therefore having the film makers also harking back to the older 70s visual style seems somewhat appropriate.

i have a few of those. They're hard to find though.

Don't you think the helmet is too large for his head ?

And the armor is absolutely bland, maybe Stallone's Dredd was an exageration in regards to the armor, but it looked better.

That's not a bad point, but it didn't really bother me.

It's hard to talk about, though, considering neither of us have an affinity for the comics.

I thought that at first, but it's totally grown on me, I feel like I was expecting it to look exactly like the Stallone movie, because the look of the movie was cool, but what we're getting is more realistic, the helmet wouldn't be thin in real life, it would be thick like motor cycle helmets or military helmets, and the street uniforms wouldn't be adorned in gold and chains, maybe like a dress uniform could be though.

Ever since it was announced that Olivia Thirlby was cast, I've been concerned that she would look wildly out of place in this picture. Looks like I was right.

She looks perfect in her role. Frighteningly perfect.

Well, pardon my saying so, but that thin little blonde looks incredibly out of place standing next to Dredd. I mean, look at her:
Image

One of them looks like he means business, the other looks like she's about to cry. Unless there's something about the character I don't know that might put that scene in context, I just have to assume that the actress and the character don't belong there.

Same here, just on looks alone she seems like anything but a "tough cop", unless her character isn't meant to be a "tough cop", still, she looks like a blonde in dusty american gladiator outfit.

apparently it's basically going to be her first day on the job in the movie, she looks like a rookie to me, no more out of place than Robin is next to Batman.

She probably IS about to cry. Dredd sprays brains around the room, asks questions later, she is a trained empath and psychic.
I grew up reading 2000 AD, I'm so damn glad that day-glo mess of Stallone's is going to get a re-boot in the ass.

There were two good things about that version though. Ian Drury, and the ABC warrior.

Judge Anderson isn't a tough cop.
She's probably fresh out of the academy here.

God. Now I wanna go buy some more Judge Dredd comics.

I have Judge Dredd vs King Kong.

"...and for smashing bi-planes, 40 YEARS!"
