I know a lot of people don't like how Bane looks, that he's not big enough (who cares?) that he wears that mask, or that coat, but I'm really digging the look, and even Hardy's weird voice. His performance is probably what I'm looking forward to seeing the most in this movie.
Also, how do guys feel about the more grandiose sense of spectacle this movie seems to be giving us? I've read complaints from people that say that isn't Batman, that he works on a much smaller level, or that someone like the Riddler or the Penguin should have been the villain. Personally, and I've said this before, but I'm glad that instead of going smaller after The Dark Knight, they're going even bigger. They're bringing the outside world into the story (we see fighter jets flying over Gotham, and we know Bane is at least known to the government). Which is why I'm also glad they chose Bane over someone like the Riddler. Bane looks like he's not just causing chaos, he looks like he's overthrowing the government, a potential dictator about to seize control and start a new regime. Indeed, a lot of the shots we see of him show him standing with his hands at his harness, as if holding onto an invisible robe or the lapels of some military uniform. Even the audio from the stadium (which I thought sounded ridiculous when first leaked), sounds like it came from some old, war propaganda movie.
Oh man, you just can't please everybody, can you? So many people complained that TDK was too small and now they complain that TDKR looks too big? Psst, fanboys. I for one, I'm really digging the spectacle. Like you t3cii, I really appreciate Bane in the sense that he seems to be completely intent on bringing anarchy to Gotham City. Maybe it's my taste for Apocalyptic films, but I totally dig that. At the same time, I think that Nolan seems to keep track of what's going on in the world and reflects it on these films. TDK hit really close to home at points, it premiered when the violence in Mexico was escalating and situations like corrupt policemen, bodies hanging from buildings, dead cops and the like were part of the reality. It always annoys me a little bit that people criticize the press conference scene for having unrealistic dialogue when the dialogue seems to be ripped out from video clips of press conferences here. Yes, people were actually saying things like "Things are worse than ever!" and "No more dead cops!" That was the reality here and although it's not even in my Top 5 of best comic book films, it's one of the reasons why I have a soft spot for TDK.
In the case of TDKR, again, I see a bit of a reflection of what's going on here. There is almost peace in Juárez, but something seems to be boiling under the surface. With the upcoming elections, people are rebelling against the candidates and making sure that their voices are heard and trying to bring down anyone who opposes them. People are angry as hell. What is troubling and what seems to be going on in TDKR, is that with people so angry, they will turn to anyone who promises to save them. That's why Bane fascinates me as a character. I don't know who's going to side with him, but some of the worst people have the best intentions and Bane seems to have the best intentions in destroying Gotham.
In that way, that sense of spectacle is something I completely welcome. I want to see this film go big and nuts. If it's going to be the end, it needs to go out with a bang. I just hope that Nolan doesn't forget to make the human drama more compelling. One of my issues with TDK is that the human drama was too understated and distant. In BB, it was easier to appreciate the characters as people. I'm just hoping we don't have another Spider-Man 3 in our hands where there is a lot going on, and it's visually impressive, but in the end it was an empty film.
And so far, the spectacle, like I've said before seems top-notch. The cinematography, the production design, the special effects will surely be awesome. The trailers and TV spots already indicate this.
