Has anyone heard of this thing? I won't go into the details, as it's all over my head, but basically this Wednesday could be very historic (assuming we'll don't all die, that is). Anyway, check out these links. For some reason when seeing them, I think of this quote from Watchmen:

"The Institue For Extraspatial Studies reports exciting and maybe alarming possibilities for opening new dimensions...".

I've heard of it.

It should be noted that while the LHC will be operational in a few days, they're just going to run a few tests. First, they'll send some particles zooming around the LHC clockwise. After that, they'll send some particles around counter-clockwise.

A month from now or so, two different groups of particles will be sent in both directions at the same time. The particles will collide and hopefully make every Physics text in the world obsolete.

Cool! :)

I guess the big stuff involving the Hadron Collider won't happen for another month or so. Still, it's almost like science fiction or something. What an age we live in!.

Kind of scary to think about. They want to re-create the Big-Bang but, who's to say there was a Big-Bang. For all we know, these guy's are about to kill us while trying to re-create something that never happened.

I don't believe that this will cause the end of the world. I don't believe that for a minute.

The primary reason why -- and I'll be the first to admit that I could be wrong about this -- is because I'm pretty sure the purpose of the LHC is not to recreate the Big Bang. See, the LHC knocks particles together so that they smash each other into their component quarks and gluons and so forth. The LHC is supposed to knock atoms into smaller parts than have ever been documented before.

The idea is that this will help us learn more about atoms, mass, string theory and yes, the Big Bang.

I very strongly doubt that anything catastrophic will come of this. The products of this experiment will be so small and will disappear so quickly that only the most sophisticated supercomputers on the planet will be able to tell us that these events ever happened.

Things like this alway fasinates me. I've been watching quite a few documentaries on what they are hoping to discover, including the higgs field, new particles etc, I've never been that good at maths or science but I can still appreciate it :p.

Some of the people I work with were commenting that it's a waste of money, but I don't think that it is - they could find something that may change or provide evidence for current theories and advance science - I hope they find something, even if it does throw a spanner in the works for current theories lol.

I was actually kinda disappointed when I woke up on wednesday morning and realised the world was still here and I had to go to work D:.
