WHOAH  That is a really, really nice mask josedacuban! What method did you use to make it? That looks better than some of the professional masks I've seen! Love how you hid the eye-holes.....

I linked to this thread from the IMdb. If any of you don't like the idea then I can remove the link. The work Josedacuban had done needed some loving in a thread there.

Let me know if this is bad Internet usage. :)

Wooow, I didn't realize my costume was gonna receive such positive feedback, lol. Thanks to everyone who liked it as it took a lot of time and resource to put the entire thing together. I know alot of you are dying to find out how to make the mask, but unfortunately I didnt make it. I have a family member who makes luchador masks and I asked her to make the Rorschach mask for me. I showed her the design I wanted and she went ahead and did it for me. Turns out it's actually pretty simple to make, but you do need to be pretty good at sewing as the ink blot design was sewn on top of the blank white mask. The white mask itself was merely a piece of white cloth cut into a B shape, then folded and sewn around the curve (from the top of the head to the back). I'll try top post up some pics of where it was sewn to help. The mask itself is 3 layers, the plain white mask, then the black nylon for the eye holes, then the inkblot itself, which is a piece of thick black cloth. Hope that helps.

Nice...your family member doesnt happen to sell on Ebay do they? I saw one Luchadore mask on there that looked a little like yours but yours is nicer. The ones on ebay look good, except they have a seam right down the middle and one side appears to be of a shiny spandex, while the other side is flat white. Either way,if your family member wanted to make some money on the side,I'm sure they could sell a few on here!

jajaja yeah!@#!@ Of course the answer is so simple we couldn't think of it! Luchadores have the best masks ever! I have a few at home (for display) and i don't know how i didn't think of them before. arrg!

Still willing to buy one from ya though if you get your fam member to make some.

As far as I know she only makes em strictly for professional wrestlers. But I'll definitely let her know that she should make more, lol. And I saw some of the ones on Ebay. Not sure if they're worth the amount some people are selling em for. Saw one mask going for $150! That's just a bit ridiculous...especially since the one she made me is far better, and I only paid $15 (shipping of course :P ).

My only gripe so far about the whole costume is the fedora seems kind of small...

Seriously I'm wondering if anyone could help me out and tell me what size nylons or something I need for a mask?

3 layer? 1 black 2 white.

Do I use a sharpie on the last layer?

I don't know about size, but I used 3 layers (1 white 2 black), cut the pattern and was very happy with the result (it does need to be sewn to prevent the edges of the white from folding under or flapping as you move.
Where'd you get them? I'm having trouble finding the right ones every store I go to...

Any suggestions on a specific brand? sew the bottom edges?

It took several tries for me to make an acceptable mask, so I bought mine at a nearby overstock store. I also got some at Wal-Mart. As far as sewing goes all that really requires sewing is the top white layer. You may also want to sew up the holes where the legs were if you plan on removing your hat ;). As far as type goes I paid no attention and had no trouble with any of the tights I bought.
Awesome what I'm doing now! It shall work!!

Oh and josedacuban I'll totally pay $15 for a mask like that if not even $25 let your family member know. ;)

Yeah...I'd pay around 20-40 bucks for a mask like that. The ones on ebay dont look nearly as good and cost insane amounts of money. And as for Fedoras,I think yours looks great as is,but heres a link to a company I've used in the past-tons of fedoras at great prices and fast shipping

Hey guys, this is my first post here, I just got back from FanExpo in Toronto this past weekend where I debuted my recently finished Rorschach costume. There were a few other Rorschach costumers as I expected, but I did get a lot of positive reaction to the effort I put into mine, which apparently it shows compared to others. I modelled my costume after the scene in chapter VI page 24 when he throws the murdered dog at Gerald Grice and stares down at him - a particularly menacing shot of our favourite psycho.

Here are some photos snapped outside of the convention centre on Saturday night. I'd like to have gone a few blocks north to downtown where there is a lot more urban decay, graffiti and trash, but we did get some shots that were evocative of Watchmen's New York.

Image

As for the costume construction itself, here is a brief rundown:
- Trench coat from Goodwill, dyed darker brown and removed a couple buttons, and hemmed to knee-length. Splattered with black and brown spraypaint, while the "violent new continent" is red spraypaint.
- Grey pinstripe wool suit from Goodwill, dyed purple (this caused it to shrink, so I cut the sleeves off and pinned them so they just poked out from the sleeves of the trench coat)
- Fedora from thrift store, put a purple ribbon around it, shortened the brim by a couple centimetres
- Brown leather gloves, white scarf from Value Village
- Black leather boots from Value Village, spray painted brown and dirtied up
- Mask was made by wearing black nylons on my head, followed by two layers of opaque white nylons. The black one obscured my face, while the white ones layered up left no black showing. The pattern is just permanent marker. For the record I can see, but not terribly well.

A lot of people commented on how realistic it looked, like I didn't borrow my mother's trench coat and promise to bring it back in pristine condition. It's tricky, but look for a trench coat that has all the right details like the placement of the pockets, buttons, flaps, belt loops, etc, then dye it a darker brown. After that I misted and splattered spray paints on it to grub it up, then took it to the driveway and beat the hell out of it. The neighbours will think you're crazy for attacking a trench coat with a rake and a hoe, but it doesn't make much sense for a nutcase vigilante like Rorschach to have a perfectly clean coat. I used the same methods of weathering on my hat and suit, even lightly misting the mask with some brown and black.

I planned on doing up several more masks that I could switch between, but time ran out for that idea. I think it's pretty much useless to rack your brain over how to make an animated mask like that from the comic, which exists only because of Dr. Manhattan. Just focus on the rest of the costume, and the mask is actually the easiest. It makes a big difference to actually have the right colours or reasonable alternatives (you can instantly tell who has the "Seriously, who's going to notice" attitude towards their costume). Just don't use a t-shirt, and avoid cutting eyeholes in it to see. Sometimes you have to suffer for your art!

Let me know if there's any other questions. I did it in less than a week an it cost me less than $100.

Holy shit, I haven't been to this thread in months...but you sir, are a badass. Thanks for all the great info too! The costume is amazing.

Hello I'm new.
Some really nice work being done here.
I'm having a go too

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd25/DB41893/008.jpg

Just an early test really to see how the colours worked together.
I'm not entirely happy with the hat. I spoke to Dave Gibbons over here in London last week and he said the hat should be more of a trilby with a small brim like the italian designs, they look almost like a pork pie hat.

The full face hood is being worked on at the moment. I'm still choosing the best fabric for the job, it's either gonna be Cheesecloth, fine weave hemp or a new weave of silk. Then I'll be painting on the blot design with fabric paint. Fabric paint is great cause you can water it down and get that faded transitional look that the movie stills seem to have. Like the blot was in the process of changing but was frozen by the photo being taken. Thats the idea anyway.

I got a pair of purple pinstripes that I use for another costume. Also got a pair of chelsea boots.

So yeah it'll be shaping up over the next week or two.
Really looking forward to seeing more of what others come up with.

Doggy that is lookin' swank. Where the heck does a person even find a purple pinstripe suit? Thrift stores?

Not too many people can get costume advice from Dave Gibbons, man, but I actually think the current hat works all right, too. I know the kind of hat you are talking about that you need, though. Like the one Jef Costello wears in Le Samourai.

hey everyone, new here and SUPER excited about the movie and of course my work-in-progress Rorschach :)

here's what I have on order so far (using super fast shipping)
http://www.fashionscarvesandshawls.com/ ... assic.html
http://www.villagehatshop.com/jaxon_ico ... _wool.html

I'm also thinking of going in more of a superhero-esque direction with regards to the coat. In the comic, I see a lot of folds that make it look like a typical trenchcoat, but looking at some stills and promo stuff from the upcoming movie, it almost looks like he's wearing a leather trenchcoat. http://fsnetmedia.s3.amazonaws.com/watc ... sch-md.jpg the sheen and folds there make it seem more like it's leather to me. anyway, the trenchcoat I'm trying to win from an auction is this one: http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/8037/trenchtp5.jpg I think it would really make the outfit look menacing!

now I have two questions regarding the mask and pants. first, I'm going to begin working on the mask today, and after looking at that youtube video posted earlier on how someone made their mask (and josedacuban said he did it that way), I see a lot of people commenting that they're having trouble with markers bleeding on the white. any thoughts on how to prevent this? or what type of marker to use that would be less likely to cause this?

second, what do you guys think of using the pants from this joker costume: http://us.st12.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/ ... 4_36470403

it's certainly going to be a cheap fabric, but the pants ARE purple with pinstripes....I found a pair of dark navy (or maybe once black but washed too many times? haha) pinstripe pants at goodwill, but I've never dyed clothing before. the joker pants seem to save that step and get to the fun part of making it look worn!

thanks in advance :) will be checking this thread regularly to learn from everyone's creativity!

What do you guys think of doing a Roschach costume without the jacket I know it's just the one part in Moloch's place but I still think it's different. Oh and I don't want to spend the 60 bucks for a full length trench and altering it shorter.

I don't have any problem with it, you'd still be easily recognizable to other fans. Plus, Rorschach's suit is hell of sharp. The man's a snappy dresser.

Hi all, new here.

Trying to create a Rorschach costume for Halloween next week. Cutting it rather fine. Only have the gloves so far. Going to scour all the charity shops in the city for the coat/suit/hat.

For the mask I'm going to try and use white lycra. Found a website (http://www.fabricuk.com/fabrics.php?fab ... 4#dataform). You can order a sample for 50p, which I recieved in the post yesterday. Have been practising patterns and such on it, and using a normal permanent marker seems to work. Going to attempt to cut eyeholes and cover them with white mesh and then colour over them. Hopefully it'll work.

All the little details are all for my benefit though as at the party I'm going to, no-one is going to have a clue who Rorschach is.

I also have this benefit, both at work where I'll be dressing up as well as at the party I'm hosting, haha.

What design are you drawing on your mask? I've got it narrowed down to 3 (taking a lot longer than I thought!): Chapter 1, page 6 (first appearance); Chapter 1, page 15 (first time he scares your average person, but saying he's fine and happy); Chapter 12, page 20 lower left (he breaks from the group, deciding to tell the world about Veidt).

I'm getting my doctorate in clinical psychology, and I definitely agree with the people who say that the design you choose tells a little bit about you. :)

here's my "completed" Rorschach mask. the Fedora arrives later today, so until then I had to make do with a Sox hat. please excuse the dirty mirror! :P

what's that slightly to my left?!

oh no! now it moved ever so slightly to my right!

what do you guys think? constructive and honest criticism is more than welcome. I used black fabric markers on one layer of white opaque tights, then put a second layer of white opaque tights under that, and a layer of black opaque tights under that. Basically the same method described earlier in this thread.

Looking at the pics now, it looks like one of my eye blots is much larger than the other, but part of me thinks it's just stretched too much, cause I was fiddling with/adjusting that side a lot.

I have a light trench coat like this: http://images.buzzillions.com/images_pr ... 46_300.jpg

But I cannot find any cheap purple pin striped pants anywhere.

Should I go with a dark brown, black or other color pants/gloves?

Thanks Dawg.
I got some Purple pinstripe fabric off Ebay last year. I used it for another costume that needed purple pants. It was just luck really and a lot of searching. But now that everyone and thier auntie is doing the Joker costume purple pinstripes are a lot easier to come by.

I wouldn't recommend using the Rubies Joker costume pants (rubies is always really bad quality) unless your good at altering clothing, in which case you maybe able to adjust the fit. I would far more recommend the chinese cosplay companies that are making the Joker costume. The quality seems to be alot better.

Looking good bgbopper, I think the Leather trench would work well. I believe the one used in the movie is waxed coated canvas, but they are really hard to come by in that tan brown colour.

Spacecrusader if your on a tight budget you could try dying a pair of light coloured pants and then adding the pinstripes with white fabric paint and a straight edge. I've seen some pretty good results using this method.
