It seems to me that Heroes is the poor mans version of the X-Men

I'd say the show is like X-men meets Watchmen, but rather than merely a copy, Kring and co. are like fans like us discussing what they'd want to see out of, e.g. an Xmen TV series, and then going ahead and making it, and then while theyre at it they throw in a huge number of popular fiction references, the most valued sources referred to the most times (Watchmen).
Btw you mustve noticed Stan Lee showed up in a cameo - I interpret that as the Xmen creator giving his blessing to the show.

I caught him as the bus driver.

Stan is an inveterate (if somewhat charming) self-promoter. He showed up 'cuz they invited him.

"don't worry new york! i will save you!"

At that moment Hiro and Ando were discussing their "Quest" and Hiro says something like "Life's not like in the comic books"

Coach door opens.

another good example is this part which i believe Heroes took from Watchmen.

The part when Sylar visited her mom, her house was adourned with snow globes. forgot how the story went from there.

Snowglobes was a part in Laurie's story when she was recollecting her moments as a child.

I didn't see the series originally, but I'm catching up thanks to the magic of DVD. (I avoid TV because I think most of it is unmitigated CRAP.) My wife are totally sucked into the first season.

Tim Kring has stated that no comic book mythology was an influence for the show.

No, but he doesn't write the series. I'm not familiar with the writers, but I noticed that Jeph Loeb has production credits and co-wrote at least one episode. If the rest of the staff writers are fanboys/girls, they couldn't help but be influenced by comic history.

BTW Hiro's "I did it" when he first teleports into NY is pure Watchmen.

Tim Kring has written forty-six episodes, revising each and every script.

Did anyone see that episode of the Simpsons with Stan Lee? He started hanging out at the comic book store. When Bart asked Comic Book Guy "He came back?", CBG replied "He never left  " :)

Didn't he try to fit a Hulk action figure into a batmobile? Than when Milhouse (I think) complains that he ruined it, Stan Lee says "Ruined it? Or improved it!?"
